Program Description
Research Summary
PSI Benin looked at 1997 DHS and conducted a 1999 KAP study. DHS data indicates that multiple sex partners is the dominant risk behavior for most of Benin's males, whether married (28%) or not in union (34%).
PSI's 1999 KAP confirmed that 36% of men and 6% of women had had multiple partners or other partners that put them at risk of HIV/AIDS. In this KAP, 21% of the men were married. Men known to be at risk because of their multiple partners used condoms only 57% of the time with their occasional partners and only 15% of the time with their spouses, substantially increasing the risk of transmission to wife/mother and, eventually the new-born infants.
According to an assessment done by UNAIDS with the Benin PNLS in April 2000, having multiple partners and/or sexual partners is the most important behavior that puts most at risk.
