Target Group: Mobile Populations
Description of Behavioral Problem
There are many barriers to condom use, such as embarrassment at being seen purchasing condoms, knowledge of correct use and not knowing to use condoms with people who appear healthy.
Program Description
PSI/Burkina Faso's IPC programs target truck drivers and gold miners; surveys showed that these groups exhibited high risk behavior, are underserved, and are accessible. 11 full-time "Agents de Terrain" carry out the IPC activities. The Supervisor visits each agent for 1-2 days on average once a month to ensure quality. The majority of the agents are former salesmen, and all went through a 6-week training based on a model used by PSI in Nigeria. Approximately 85% of their time is dedicated to IPC work, and the other 15% is for conducting "opening outlet sales blitzes" on an as-needed basis or on data collection for mass media campaigns. This need is determined by PSI MAP/LQAS survey data. Depending on the term they conduct between 12-18 IPC sessions per day with an average of 6 people in attendance. Brochures are distributed to reinforce program messages.
