Program Description
The objectives of PSI/Bolivia's Lider's Program are to: increase knowledge of STI and HIV/AIDS prevention; strengthen self-esteem of students by clarifying values, improving communication between peers and parents and community, so that they feel more comfortable with their own sexuality; motivate adolescents and youth to attract them to use health centers closest to their residence or whatever facility that seems most appealing to them; motivate students to adopt responsible and healthy sexuality and communicate this with their partner; and to adopt preventive methods by the students regarding STI/HIV/unintended pregnancy. The program targets high school students 14-18 years of age. IPC activities consist of ateacher administered reproductive health and lifeskills curriculum, based on a standardized manual. IPC message content includes information about sex and reproductive health, as well as values, communication, self-esteem and decision-making. Each activity lasts 45 minutes. The program reached approximately 4000 students each year. Formative research for the program included focus groups, and review of programs in other countries. The program was monitored, including a pre- and post-test and a midterm evaluation for key message assimilation.
